What a Bitcoin voucher actually is
Try gifting bitcoin the direct way and you will see the problem immediately. You need the recipient's wallet address. Which means they need a wallet. Which means a download, a seed phrase, a backup they will not lose, and a conversation about what happens if the phone dies — all of it happening at a kitchen table with other people waiting.
A voucher moves the hard part to a moment of their choosing. You buy a code today; they redeem it in March into whatever wallet they end up trusting. The purchase and the custody decision are decoupled, and that single design choice is why this product survives despite costing more than buying on an exchange.
The issuers, compared on real cost
Marketing copy across this niche is nearly identical. The pricing is not.
| Issuer | Stated fee | Flat component | Effective at €25 | Account? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Azteco online | 2% | None | ~2% | None |
| Azteco in person | 7% | $0–1 processing | ~11% | None |
| Bitnovo | Retailer-set | Varies by shop | ~4–7% | Yes |
| CryptoVoucher | ~4% | €2.50–3 | ~16% | Light |
| Binance Gift Card | None | None | 0% | Verified, both sides |
Two conclusions from that table. Azteco online is the best value for a straightforward Bitcoin gift. And Binance Gift Card is free but not cheap — the zero fee is real, and it costs the recipient a full identity verification on an exchange before they can touch it, which for a beginner is the most expensive condition on the whole list.
Why flat fees punish small vouchers
This is the arithmetic nobody selling vouchers wants to walk you through.
| Voucher | Flat €3 as % | Plus 4% service | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| €10 | 30% | +4% | 34% |
| €25 | 12% | +4% | 16% |
| €50 | 6% | +4% | 10% |
| €100 | 3% | +4% | 7% |
| €500 | 0.6% | +4% | 4.6% |
Gifting it well
The voucher is the easy part. Three things separate a gift that gets redeemed from one that expires in a drawer.
Make the gift actually land
- Add your time. Twenty minutes sitting with them while they choose a wallet and write down a recovery phrase. This is the part that works.
- Give them something physical. A printed certificate, or the Bitnovo till receipt folded into a card — with the actual code sealed separately. See crypto gift certificates.
- Check the expiry before you wrap it. Buying in October for Christmas is fine with some issuers and a problem with others.
- Never print the live code where it can be read. Print the amount and the instructions; deliver the code privately.
- Write down what a seed phrase is and that nobody should ever ask for it. That note will be worth more than the bitcoin one day.
The volatility conversation
Worth having explicitly, because it is where crypto gifts turn awkward.
A Bitcoin voucher bought in November and redeemed in February could be worth noticeably more or less than you paid. If the recipient understands they were given exposure to bitcoin, a drawdown is part of the education. If they thought they were given fifty dollars, a drawdown is a story about your judgement.
So decide which gift you are giving and say it out loud. If the point is a fixed amount of money that will still be that amount next month, a stablecoin voucher is the honest product. If the point is bitcoin, say "this is bitcoin, it moves, that is the interesting part" — and the conversation never becomes uncomfortable.

Bitcoin vouchers: FAQ
What is a Bitcoin voucher?
A code — printed, emailed, or shown as a QR — that converts into bitcoin in whatever wallet the holder chooses. You buy it with ordinary money. The recipient redeems it whenever they are ready. It is the only clean way to give somebody bitcoin without asking them to open an exchange account first.
Which Bitcoin voucher is cheapest?
Azteco at 2% when bought online is the cheapest we have measured, and it has no flat fee component — which matters enormously on small amounts. Bitnovo lands around 4–7% all-in depending on the shop. CryptoVoucher states roughly 4% plus a €2.50–3 network fee, which on a €25 voucher is about 16%.
Do Bitcoin vouchers expire?
Policies differ by issuer, and yes, several do. Retail vouchers usually carry a validity period printed on the receipt. Binance Gift Cards created after 10 April 2024 expire six months after creation. Check the expiry before you gift-wrap anything, especially if you are buying ahead for a holiday.
Can I buy a Bitcoin voucher with cash?
Yes, in Europe. Bitnovo vouchers are sold at more than 40,000 retail points including Carrefour, Fnac, El Corte Inglés and Día. Azteco also has an in-person option, at a higher 7% commission plus a processing fee. Cash-to-bitcoin without a bank in the loop is one of the genuinely useful things this product does.
Is a Bitcoin voucher a good gift for a beginner?
The best available, with one condition: add your time. A voucher plus twenty minutes helping them choose a wallet and write down a recovery phrase converts far more people into genuine holders than a larger amount handed over cold. See how to gift crypto.
What if the price moves between buying and redeeming?
The recipient bears it, in both directions. A voucher bought in November and redeemed in February may be worth noticeably more or less. If the point is to gift a fixed amount of money rather than exposure to bitcoin, use a stablecoin voucher instead — and if the point is the exposure, say so explicitly when you hand it over.
