Gift Card Region Locks: The Complete Guide

This is the mistake with no refund. Nearly every brand gift card is a claim against one country's storefront, the lock lives in the card rather than in the payment, and a delivered code is treated as spent. Three minutes of checking prevents it permanently.

CEX.IO is a licensed exchange — FinCEN-registered MSB (NMLS 1804170), money-transmitter licences in 34+ US states, a Gibraltar FSC DLT licence and CySEC authorisation in the EU. Bonus is trading-fee credit, not withdrawable cash — read the full terms first.

How region locks actually work

A gift card is not money. It is a claim against a specific legal entity's storefront. Amazon.com and Amazon.de are operated by different subsidiaries, hold separate balances, settle in different currencies, and honour different consumer protection regimes. A code issued against one is meaningless to the other — not blocked by a policy that could be waived, but genuinely unredeemable, the way a train ticket for one country's rail network is unredeemable on another's.

The consequence is the part people underestimate. Because a code is a bearer instrument — anyone holding the characters can spend them — platforms cannot accept returns. They have no way to establish that you did not already redeem it. So the combination is brutal: a mistake that is easy to make, impossible to detect until redemption, and impossible to reverse afterwards.

The rules brand by brand

Every brand implements this slightly differently, and the differences decide which mistakes are recoverable.

What determines the usable region for each major brand, and whether it can be changed after the fact. Verify current policy with the brand — these rules are set by them, not by crypto platforms.
Brand Locked by Can the account region be changed? Practical note
Amazon Storefront (.com, .co.uk, .de …) Separate accounts per marketplace Balance is per-marketplace and cannot be transferred between them
Apple / iTunes Apple ID country Yes, but balance must be zero first Loading a foreign card is blocked; you cannot change country while holding credit
Google Play Play billing profile country Generally once per year only The least forgiving in this table — get it right first time
Steam Wallet currency Changes with sustained purchase location A code in the wrong currency is simply refused at redemption
PlayStation PSN account region, set at signup No — you would need a new account The textbook example; region is permanent for the account
Xbox / Microsoft Microsoft account country Yes, with friction Changing country can strip existing balance and subscriptions
Nintendo eShop Nintendo Account country Yes, balance must be zero Account region, not console region — people reliably get this backwards
Battle.net Regional balance pool (EU / US / APAC) Balance does not cross regions Your characters live in one region; the balance must match it
Netflix / Spotify Account billing country Varies Also constrained by plan type — some plans refuse codes entirely
Prepaid Visa / Mastercard Card network acceptance, not a storefront n/a The genuine exception — but with FX fees and its own restrictions

The three-minute check

  1. Ask for the account country, not the postal address

Message the recipient: "Open your account settings and tell me exactly what it says under country or region." That sentence is the whole safeguard. People move, keep old accounts, and confidently misremember.

  2. Ask for the currency shown in the account

Some brands separate currency from country. Steam ties the wallet to a currency; a EUR wallet cannot take a USD code. Get the currency string as well as the country.

  3. Match the platform’s product listing exactly

Platforms list the same brand once per region — "Amazon US", "Amazon DE", "Amazon UK". Open the product page and confirm the region and currency in the title and the description, not just in a dropdown you scrolled past.

  4. Read the product-level notes before paying

This is where brands hide the extra rules: whether the balance can pay for subscriptions, whether multiple codes can be combined, whether the card works in-store as well as online.

  5. Keep the evidence

Screenshot the recipient’s answer and the product page. If something goes wrong, a support conversation goes very differently when you can show what you were told and what you bought.

Quick reference before you pay

  • Country field from the account settings, in writing.
  • Currency shown inside the account.
  • Platform product page states the same country and currency.
  • Product notes read — subscriptions, stacking limits, in-store use.
  • Screenshots of both the answer and the product page saved.

Four myths that cost money

"A VPN will fix it." No. The lock is on the account, not the connection. A VPN changes the apparent origin of your traffic and nothing about the country field or the wallet currency. It also breaches most brands' terms, which puts the account at risk on top of the wasted code.

"We're both in the EU, so it's fine." No. Amazon, Apple, Google, Steam and Sony all run separate national storefronts inside the EU. The single market governs trade between businesses and consumers; it does not merge gift-card balances.

"It says global on the listing." Usually wrong, especially on marketplaces. Some brands do issue codes valid across a currency zone, but a listing claiming global validity for a brand you know is region-locked is either mislabelled or a scam. Check the brand's own help pages.

"I'll just change their account country." Sometimes possible, often destructive. Apple and Nintendo require a zero balance first. Microsoft can strip existing subscriptions. Google Play generally allows one change per year. Changing a country to rescue a $25 code can cost somebody their library.

If you already bought the wrong region

Act in this order, quickly, before you redeem anything.

  1. Do not attempt redemption again. Repeated failed attempts on some brands flag the code and complicate any goodwill resolution.
  2. Contact the platform immediately with the order ID, and say plainly that the code is unredeemed and you bought the wrong region. A minority of platforms will exchange it as goodwill. Politeness and speed both help.
  3. Check whether the recipient can use the region. Sometimes a second account, a different family member, or a planned country change makes the code usable after all.
  4. If you must sell it, use an escrowed marketplace, expect 50–70% of face value, and read selling gift cards for crypto first. Never accept a buyer who wants to move off-platform.

Products with no region problem

If you cannot confirm the recipient's region — you are buying for a colleague, a distant relative, or a surprise — do not guess. Choose a product where the question does not arise.

  • Crypto vouchers. Coins have no region. A Bitcoin voucher redeems into any wallet in any country. This is the cleanest solution and it is why vouchers exist.
  • Prepaid Visa or Mastercard. Works wherever the network is accepted, at the cost of a heavier fee stack and mandatory identity verification.
  • Ask. Unromantic and effective. "Which country is your Amazon account?" is a less awkward message than "sorry, the gift didn't work".

Once the region is settled, the rest of the purchase is straightforward — see how to buy gift cards with crypto for the full flow, and crypto gift card fees for what you should be paying.

Region locks: FAQ

Does paying with crypto change the region lock?

No, in any way at all. The lock is metadata attached to the card by the brand. The payment method never touches it. A US Amazon code bought with Bitcoin, a bank card, or cash is identically locked to Amazon.com.

Can I use a VPN to redeem a card from another region?

No. Region locks are enforced against the account, not your IP address. A VPN changes where you appear to be connecting from; it does not change the country field on the account or the currency of its wallet. It also frequently violates the brand's terms, which risks the account itself.

What if the recipient and I are both in the EU?

Irrelevant to the lock. Amazon, Apple, PlayStation, Steam and Google all operate separate national storefronts inside the EU with separate balances. A German account cannot load a French-region card. The single market does not extend to gift-card metadata.

Are any cards genuinely region-free?

A small number of global brands issue codes valid across a currency zone, and some open-loop prepaid products work anywhere the card network is accepted. But "global" claims on marketplace listings are usually wrong. If region-independence is essential, a prepaid card or a crypto voucher is the honest answer — coins have no region.

Can I resell a wrong-region card?

Technically yes, practically badly. You will take a heavy discount, and the buyer pool for "unredeemed foreign gift card, trust me" is dominated by people who intend to defraud you. If you try, use an escrowed platform and expect 50–70% of face value. See selling gift cards for crypto.

Do platforms ever refund a wrong-region purchase?

Rarely, and never as a right. Once a code is delivered it is a bearer instrument — you could have already used it, and there is no way for the platform to prove otherwise. A few will exchange an unredeemed code as goodwill if you ask immediately and politely. Do ask. Do not plan on it.
