The December timing problem
Three things go wrong at once in the last ten days before Christmas, and none of them are obvious until you are in the middle of them.
- Inventory thins on popular brands. Platforms buy gift-card stock wholesale, and the specific regional variant you need is the one most likely to be out of stock in peak week. The US Amazon card is fine; the PSN card for a smaller market may not be.
- On-chain fees widen. Not because of Christmas specifically, but because activity rises when everyone transacts at once. A $25 card paid on-chain in Bitcoin can pick up a double-digit percentage fee.
- Support queues lengthen. This is the one that actually hurts. A stalled order in October is fixed in hours. The same order on 23 December may not be looked at until after the holiday.
What to give whom
The most common December mistake is choosing the product first and the person second. Reverse it.
| Recipient | Give | Avoid | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Curious, non-technical | Bitcoin voucher + an hour | A wallet address on a card | No signup on the day; they redeem when ready |
| Already holds crypto | Hardware wallet, or sats to their address | A custodial gift card | They have opinions about custody; respect them |
| Teenager | Small voucher, or game credit | Anything needing an exchange account | Minors cannot open verified accounts |
| Sceptical relative | A gift card bought with crypto | Coins and an argument | Usefulness converts; lectures do not |
| Partner | An experience voucher, or a wallet set up together | A surprise altcoin position | Shared decisions age better than surprises |
| Someone who mentioned it once | $25 voucher, low stakes | A large amount | Test the interest before funding it |
Making it unwrappable
Nobody enjoys opening a screenshot. Four options that feel like actual presents:
- A physical voucher. Bitnovo vouchers come on a till receipt from a European shop and fold into a card. Genuinely tangible.
- A printed certificate. Amount, coin, date and instructions on paper — with the actual code sealed in a separate envelope. Templates and the safety rules in crypto gift certificates.
- A hardware wallet with a balance already on it. The best conversion gift in this category, and it comes in a box. See giving a hardware wallet.
- A book plus a small voucher. Around $35 total and consistently well received by sceptics, because the book does the explaining you would otherwise have to do at dinner.
If you have left it late
It is 23 December and you need something. This is the order to work through.
Last-minute, in priority order
- Pay over Lightning or with a stablecoin. Confirmation delays are the main thing that ruins a late order. Do not use on-chain Bitcoin or Ethereum mainnet tonight.
- Choose a widely stocked brand and region. US and Western European variants of major brands are the safest inventory bet.
- Confirm the recipient's account country first, even in a hurry — a region mismatch has no refund and no fix.
- Buy direct from a platform, not a reseller. Reseller delivery times are the least predictable part of this market.
- Consider an Azteco voucher — no account on either side, redeems in under a minute, so nothing depends on the recipient doing anything tonight.
- Have a fallback. If delivery has not arrived within the hour, buy something else rather than refreshing an inbox on Christmas Eve.
The hour that makes it work
This is the part that separates a crypto gift that gets used from one that expires in a drawer, and it costs nothing.
Block out an hour between Christmas and New Year — the quiet week when everybody is available and nobody is busy. Sit down with the recipient and do four things:
- Let them choose the wallet. Not you. Ownership starts with the choice.
- Let them write down the recovery phrase, in their own handwriting, on paper. Then tell them plainly: anyone who reads these words owns this money, and if they are lost nobody on earth can recover it.
- Watch them redeem the code themselves. Doing it once removes most of the fear.
- Tell them nobody will ever legitimately ask for those words. Not you, not support, not an exchange. That single sentence is worth more than the gift.

Crypto Christmas gifts: FAQ
When should I buy crypto Christmas gifts?
Two weeks before, not two days. December combines peak retail demand with elevated network activity, so platform inventory thins on popular brands, on-chain fees widen, and support queues lengthen — meaning a stalled order takes days rather than hours to fix. Mid-December is the sweet spot.
What is the best crypto gift for someone who knows nothing about it?
A Bitcoin voucher plus an hour of your time between Christmas and New Year. The voucher removes the signup problem on the day; the hour is what turns it into something they actually hold. A code with no explanation is homework, not a present.
Should I gift coins or a gift card?
Coins for people who have expressed interest. A gift card bought with crypto for everybody else. Giving a sceptical relative a volatile asset they did not ask for on Christmas morning is a conversation, not a gift.
Can I still buy a gift card on Christmas Eve?
Usually yes — digital delivery is instant on most platforms. The risks are inventory gaps on popular brands and network congestion. If you are buying late, pay over Lightning or with a stablecoin on a cheap network so confirmation is not the thing that ruins your evening.
Are there real Christmas discounts on crypto gift cards?
Occasionally, and the genuine discount window is Black Friday rather than December. By Christmas week, platforms have no reason to discount because demand is at its peak. Treat December "sale" framing with scepticism.
How much should I gift?
For a first-time recipient, $25–$100 is the range that works: real money, small enough that a drawdown is not a story about your judgement. Above roughly $1,000, think about custody and — in the US — the $19,000 annual exclusion and basis records.
